The final product!

I can't believe I forgot to post the finished product: Reused the old pedestal sink, new mirror from Lowe's, new toilet and faucet from Home Depot, subway tiles from Craigslist, penny tiles and accent tiles from the Tile Shop. Oh and I decided to go for Pensive Sky with the paint. Very happy with that decision!
New medicine cabinet from Lowe's (not a fan after trying to fit my stuff in it -- make sure to check how deep cabinets are!)
New Kohler shower pan with a teak drain cover from Thomasville Showroom.
Towel rack from Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Pensive sky

The girls both liked this color best out of the ones I already had lying around. Thinking of maybe not bothering with new samples and just going for it? The only thing I worry about is that it's almost exactly the color of the floor, which could be a lot of the same color, but it would allow us to accessorize in whatever color we want, which would be nice. And the white trim will break it up a bit...
Imagine doing some deep thinking on the toilet, surrounded by this color.

Where things stand

Figured I should include some photographic evidence that I'm actually making progress with the renovation. Not that I've done any of the work myself. If you look at the bottom of the photo, you can see the light fixture I eventually chose. Of the two I was choosing between, one wasn't available when I went to Lowe's, and the other looked much cheaper in person. So I just picked one off the shelf. So much for crowd-sourcing!

Light vs. Light

Do I get this guy:

Who's on trend?

Just want to point out this recent article on Houzz, about using white subway tiles with gray grout. Way ahead of you, Houzz. Well, I have the tile already. But I was totally planning on getting grout. Specifically Delorean Gray grout at Home Depot, because that's just the coolest grout name ever.

Shingle style home in Hanover NH traditional bathroom

Oh, or maybe I should do Dove Gray instead. This is what happens when I ask questions of Google.

This is a picture of a bathroom where they used Delorean Gray:

Nice, or too dark?
I'm having trouble finding a picture of a room that used Dove Gray, but it's lighter. Will add one later if I can find it.

Here's another Delorean photo:

Mirror? Medicine cabinet? Mirrored medicine cabinet?

Ikea seems to be the cheapest around when it comes to mirrors and medicine cabinets. I went over there the other day but was kind of underwhelmed. But still, I might go with a combination of these (maybe a mirror over the sink, plus a mirrored cabinet over the toilet).

Lillangen medicine cabinet, $69.99, 23 5/8" x 8 1/4" x 25 1/4"
Savern tilting mirror, $39.99, 23 5/8" x 23 5/8"
The only negative with the tilting mirror is that I probably wouldn't be able to put a shelf under it if I want to.

Or, you know, I could go crazy and spray-paint this a glossy white:
But I suppose that doesn't really go with the overall look...

I guess what I'm taking out of this is I probably should wait till I have walls and a floor to be deciding on mirrors and cabinets. I'm just worried I'll hold John up if I don't have something ready. I should probably be focusing on more structural things, like the pocket door and shower door.

BUT -- while I'm thinking of accessories, I did like the Lillholmen series of accessories from Ikea. Other things I wrote down from my trip (to keep in mind):

Grundtal towel rail (with two bars and hooks)
Grundtal glass shelf (stainless brackets, could fit under or above a mirror)
Skar cabinet with mirror
Godmorgan mirror
Lillangen mirror cabinet with two doors
Lillolmen glass shelf
Stave mirror in medium brown (it looks like they don't carry this stain anymore??)

Molger step stool (for in the shower) -- eh, maybe not? It's birch, and it sounds like you'd have to strip off the coating in order to stain it to match the teak. Blech.

Shower door

Giving up on the pivot shower door idea. Just too expensive. So I think I will probably go with this?

$299 from Home Depot (Kohler)

Oh yes, let me just get out my credit card!

The BookBike.

I just had to laugh when I saw this on my blog reader. This admittedly awesome looking bookcase/bike rack can be yours for a mere $3,600. It is very pretty, though...

But yeah, anyway, this is more where I'm heading (for the living room/bathroom wall that currently has a door in it but won't once we move the door into the hallway):
The Gearup Floor to Ceiling Rack in oak fits two bikes (and can fit more with attachments) for a perfectly respectable $125.99.

Shower head!

I know you've been eagerly awaiting the results of my shower head poll.

The Telford (I totally did not pay the price listed on Moen's Web site.)

This also means all my fixtures are going to be brushed nickel instead of chrome. That was a nail-biter.

Progress!

My tile combo at the Tile Shop.

So this is what I've been obsessing over lately, and I think I finally made a decision. I'm using white subway tile (3x6") for the shower surround, with these moss square mosaic tiles for an accent. On the floor are going to be matching moss penny rounds. These are all from the Tile Shop, though I think I'm going to try and buy the subway tiles off Craigslist or at a Restore-type place because I'm pretty sure I can get them cheaper than $5.99/sf.

On the shower floor, I was going to do more penny rounds, but I changed my mind when I saw this shower pan in a showroom in Rockville. It's the teak drain cover that did it.

This isn't as close up as I'd like, but check out that teak drain cover! (From Kohler's Web site)
Then I'd probably put in a teak shower bench to match!
These are super expensive so maybe I'd get the kind that isn't attached to the wall. But this one is super cool.

There are also some cool teak bath mats.

Overkill?

Now I just need to think of
  • vanity lighting
  • whether to get a dual-flush toilet
  • storage
  • towel bars
  • toilet paper holder
  • shower tower for shampoo and stuff
  • paint (of course I want Restoration Hardware's silver sage)
  • trim
  • pocket door
  • recessed light fan (same as upstairs)
  • mirror (or mirror/medicine cabinet?)
